Michael Caines MBE, Paul Heathcote MBE and Nigel Haworth, all patrons of Hospitality Action, will join forces to host three unique fundraising dinners at their restaurants in support of industry charity Hospitality Action.

The first of the series will kick off on Thursday 29th March, hosted by Michael Caines MBE at the Michael Caines Restaurant at ABode Manchester. Diners at all three events will enjoy a Champagne reception, followed by a five-course dinner plus coffee and petit fours. each event will have its own unique menu, carefully crafted by all three chefs, with each leading on at least one of the courses working alongside the venue’s head chef. all events will see an exciting auction and raffle take place, with lots including signed chef’s jackets and a day spent in the kitchen at each restaurant. with wine included, tickets for the evening are to be sold at £100 person.

Paul Heathcote MBE will host the second event at the Longridge Restaurant on Thursday 24th May and Nigel Haworth will host the final dinner at Northcote on Thursday 27th September. all events have been generously supported by Boutinot Wines, Illy Coffee and Paul Mellor-Bates Creative.

LONDON – Canada’s Alexandre Despatie and Reuben Ross punched their tickets to the London Olympics with a performance that was far more about boosting confidence than scoring points.

The duo, who until two weeks ago hadn’t competed together in more than a year, finished fifth in the three-metre synchronized event Monday at a Diving World Cup at the new Aquatics Centre built for this Games on Monday to claim a spot in the Summer Olympics.

“It’s great,” Despatie said on a conference call. “I looked at Reuben right away after the event tonight, I could see the relief on his face and I felt exactly the same way.”

Despatie, from Laval, Que., and Ross, from Regina, needed a top-seven finish to qualify, what Despatie called a “tall order” for the multiple world champion who was sidelined for most of last season with a knee injury.

The injury caused Despatie to miss a shot at an early qualification at last year’s world championships in Shanghai, and the two-time Olympic silver medallist admitted his confidence had taken a beating.

The two were second after Monday morning’s preliminary round before finishing with a score of 417.42.

“I needed this boost this morning as an individual diver just to feel better about myself to feel more confident,” Despatie said. “I know I can compete, I know it’s there inside of me, inside of my heart, and my head.”

Despatie and Ross will compete in the individual three-metre events on Tuesday, and need top-18 results to qualify for London in that event.

“Today was a really good day,” Ross said. “I was very, very excited, thrilled after the event. it was a big relief. it was a little stressful coming into the event, in diving, there’s a lot of uncertainty, anything can happen. It’s a great feeling right now.”

In diving, athletes secure places for their country in each event. which divers will actually compete in London will be decided later at the national trials, although barring injuries, the same group will likely be diving at the Olympics.

“We weren’t after a great score, we weren’t after a medal today, the only objective was to qualify the country for the Games and that’s what we did,” Despatie said. “We’re very relieved, it was a tall and big order for us to achieve this, but we managed to pull it off.

“We’re really happy. Now back to the drawing boards, and train a lot harder for the rest of the year.”

The World Cup marked the test event for the Aquatics Centre, described as “mythical” by one top diver and “breathtaking” by another.

The venue will host four events at this summer’s Olympics and was given a big thumbs-up Monday when the iconic London venue opened its doors for competition for the first time.

Thousands of fans poured into the sleek, wave-shaped venue to witness the latest test event, following a similar track cycling competition at the nearby velodrome over the weekend.

China dominated the opening day’s action, with double Olympic champion Chen Ruolin topping the scoring in the preliminary round for the women’s 10-metre platform. Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal and Roseline Filion of Laval are fifth and ninth respectively. The pair earned Canada’s Olympic quota spots in the event at the world championships last year with top-12 finishes.

While the week-long event provides a final opportunity for divers to secure qualification places for London, it also gives many of the world’s top performers a precious early chance to sample the atmosphere of an Olympic venue.

The Aquatics Center will also stage swimming, synchronized swimming and modern pentathlon this summer.

“Pools have their own uniqueness, design and engineering to depict culture, history or innovation. this captured all of them,” American diver Troy Dumais, a three-time Olympian, told The associated Press. “These are phenomenal facilities. We don’t often get to see things like this and sometimes it can be overwhelming and mythical, and it can throw you out of your routine.”

Australian diver Loudy Wiggins was taken aback by the 269-million-pound (US$426-million) venue.

“I walked in and said, ‘Wow, this is incredible.’ It’s quite spectacular, I’d even go as far as saying it’s breathtaking,” said Wiggins, who qualified for the final of the women’s event. “It’s got all the right references. They’ve pretty much thought of everything.”

Some 220 divers from 40 countries are competing in the World Cup, which the Chinese were expected to dominate. They swept all 10 golds in an unprecedented exploit at last year’s world championships and have dominated recent Olympics, making some of their divers household sporting names in the country.

Chen, who won both the 10-metre platform and synchronized 10-metre platform in the Beijing Games in 2008, finished a comfortable first in the women’s event Monday, nearly 65 points clear of second-place Yulia Koltunova of Russia.

“The crowd are all very excited,” Chen said. “They give you their good support whether your jump is good or bad.”

A total of 3,000 tickets have been sold for each of the three sessions per day for the test event. The capacity will stretch to 17,500 once temporary wings are added to the purpose-built venue, whose spectacular wave-like roof and location in the “gateway” to the Olympic Park makes it the one of the most striking stadiums for the games.

Redbox has signed with Verizon to offer a video-on-demand and streaming service paired with its DVDs and Blu-ray Discs at more than 35,000 kiosks, the companies announced Feb. 6.

The partnership calls for a subscription offering, with consumers paying a fee for both disc and digital. Pricing information was not available, though the companies do plan to launch the service during the second half of 2012.

“it is a subscription offering. It’s a national offering, so it’s available to any consumer [who] has broadband access, and it will be the a combination of the best of digital, as well as physical,” Coinstar CEO Paul Davis said during a conference call with investors.

But neither Coinstar nor Verizon will talk about platforms or other product offerings from the joint venture.

“as we get closer to launching this in the second half of the year we’ll get a lot more granularity and color,” he said. 

Davis added that Verizon would play the lead on acquiring content for the new service.

“we wanted someone who had access to digital content, someone who had a technology platform, someone with lot of consumers, and we believe Verizon is the perfect partner,” Davis continued. “they have a breadth of digital entertainment, unrivaled networks, and [they’re] really a leader in their space.

“We’ve been listening to our consumers, and they’ve been telling us what they would like to see is for us to have a broader offering of portable entertainment across multiple platforms. we believe our new service will give consumers the best of both worlds, both physical and digital.

While details about the new service were scant, Bob Mudge, president of Verizon consumer and mass business markets, said during a media conference call that it will strive to deliver both disc and streaming to consumers in a way they can “immediately enjoy.”

“it will focus on developing a new, single source, national, multiplatform product … that will combine the convenience of physical media rentals from Redbox … with a new, national, on-demand digital entertainment streaming and download service from Verizon,” he said.

Mudge added that Verizon and Redbox were limiting their description of the service “due to competitive concerns.”

Davis said Redbox chose Verizon for digital partly due to its 4G wireless network and FiOS TV and Internet service. as of Jan. 24 Verizon reported having 4.2 million FiOS subscribers, and 4.8 million Internet subscribers.

The joint venture sees Verizon holding a 65% ownership share, Redbox 35%.

“The joint venture will combine the accessibility and value of Redbox with Verizon’s vision for a borderless lifestyle — where consumers easily accomplish what they want or need to do, on their terms, through the power of the network,” Mudge said. “together, we are erasing old technology boundaries, freeing people to spontaneously enjoy the entertainment they want, whenever they choose, using the devices and media they prefer, at home or away.”

Ralph Schackart, analyst with William Blair & co. in Chicago, wrote in a research note that the joint venture likely will need to make a significant investment in content deals to help compete with the likes of Netflix.

“we suspect the Redbox/Verizon [partnership] will combine elements of physical and digital services. for example, perhaps a consumer will receive a ‘digital credit’ for Redbox rentals or a subscription package may include unlimited catalog streaming and a pre-designated number of physical DVD rentals for newer releases,” he wrote. “The challenge for Redbox is how to build a differentiated content offering.”

While offering DVDs and Blu-rays from every major studio, Redbox currently delays new-release titles from two studios — Universal Studios Home Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment — for 28 days. a similar agreement with Warner Home Video ended Jan. 31, leaving Redbox free to stock that studio’s discs sooner.

Michael Pachter, research analyst with Wedbush Securities, wrote in a research note that the new service could prove a viable alternative to Netflix, depending on pricing, availability of content, and the quality of the experience.

“if the service has rates similar to on-demand competitors Amazon and Apple, it is unlikely to gain traction, as we believe most consumers would to opt to pay as they go, rather than commit to a recurring monthly fee,” he wrote. “in our view, in order to attract Netflix’s former hybrid subscribers, to convince value-conscious Redbox customers to upgrade to a hybrid service, the [joint venture] will have to offer discounted rates, at least in the short term.”

What made me realize I really wanted this was sitting down every week and writing down two lists, one of what I am thankful for and two what I am cultivating. every week, MANNA Cosmetics was on my cultivating list, so at the end of 2011 I decided to make it happen and now here we are in the beginning of 2012 with a full line. the idea from start to finish took about a year to create.

Q. Did you write a business plan?

A. After owning several businesses, I realized that writing a business plan is crucial. I currently have a business plan that is constantly changing as my vision and opportunities for the line present themselves.

Q. What is your advice to other business owners?

A. I would advise business owners to set a goal and have a detailed plan of action on how to get to the goal. I would also suggest continually networking and building solid relationships. It’s amazing what can happen when you surround yourself with a fantastic support group.

Q. What is the biggest challenge you face in running your business?

You may be preparing by gathering your tent, blankets, grill, bags toss, etc., but have you already picked out your games?

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The air in the parking lot of Orlando’s Citrus Bowl smells like fresh cut oranges, shrimp and barbecue. a crowd has gathered before the game around a guy in a black chef’s coat. a camera crew orbits as he sets some shrimp and star melon kebabs on the grill with a flourish.

“Florida seafood — ya gotta love it!” the guy says, grinning. The crowd cheers. The cameraman is happy.

A man walks up and inquires about the hoopla. Someone in the crowd tells him the man in black is Justin Timineri, the state chef of Florida who’s filming a spot for ABC.

“Never heard of him,” said Paul Pedersen, of Orlando. “He’s like the governor’s mansion kinda deal? I had no idea we had a state chef.”

Move over, Mario Batali. Step aside, Gordon Ramsay. There’s a new chef on the cusp of celebrity in the U.S., and he’s from Florida.

Timineri is part culinary ambassador, part farm expert and part cheerleader for Florida-grown food. Technically, he’s a state employee working for the Florida Department of Agriculture — and he’s the only full-time state chef in the nation.

Timineri — tall, bald and known for wearing colorful sneakers — travels the Sunshine State showing people how to use the state’s produce and seafood in recipes. he creates healthy menus for people on food stamps and limited incomes and promotes the state’s food during trade missions around the world and in TV spots. next month, he’s headed to Brussels to talk up Florida grouper at the world’s largest seafood expo.

It makes sense for the state to market its bounty: Agriculture is Florida’s no. 2 industry, and unlike tourism, the no. 1 business, farming didn’t suffer much in the recession. Florida is the nation’s top producer of oranges, grapefruit and sugarcane. It’s also no. 1 with a range of vegetables, from snap peas to squash and sweet corn, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“He is such a fantastic ambassador not only for promoting products grown in Florida,” said Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam. “But he’s also a terrific ambassador with kids.”

Timineri has a new mission this year: teaching schoolchildren to eat healthier. As part of the Department of Agriculture’s effort to get kids to eat locally grown produce, Timineri does in-school cooking demos he’s dubbed “Extreme Cuisine.” a recent personal victory came when he got a class of sixth-graders to try guacamole; the children were skeptical of whole avocados but loved the finished product.

“I have the best job in all of state government,” Timineri said.

The 37-year-old grew up in Tallahassee with Italian grandparents and good food.

“I knew ever since I could remember that I wanted to be a chef,” he said. “When I was little, I was always peeking around in the kitchen.”

Timineri didn’t go to culinary school. Instead, he got a job in a Tallahassee restaurant and then worked his way up in various kitchens. Eventually, he took a job as an event chef for the professional stock car and golf tours.

In 2006, he heard the state chef’s job created in the mid-1990s was open. he was hired over 60 others and makes $43,000 a year as part of the ag agency’s marketing department. his office includes a small test kitchen attached to the Bureau of Seafood.

Since becoming Florida’s state chef, Timineri won a Food Network Challenge with a recipe for crispy, pan-seared Florida snapper with passion fruit cream.

When he’s not traveling, he helps with events at the governor’s mansion. he especially likes cooking for Gov. Rick Scott and his family.

“They are very health conscious,” Timineri said. “Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and seafood.”

Timineri has one tip for home cooks: Buy produce in-season, and buy local.

“People should first go to grocery store or the farmers market and find out what’s fresh and in season,” he said. “Then go home to find a recipe to match it.”
